Accepted Evaluation Status
Purpose
In addition to supporting the evaluation of shots administered as 'Valid' or 'Invalid', ICE also returns an 'Accepted' evaluation status code. Since ICE primarily supports the evaluation and forecasting of routine, age-based immunization recommendations, the 'Accepted' status is used to acknowledge shots that may or may not be considered valid. Often this determination of validity must be made by taking into account patient considerations that are not known to the ICE service (e.g., a high-risk indication). This documentation describes the use of the 'Accepted' evaluation status within ICE and provides information on options for local configurations, given that local systems may require use of a binary Valid/Invalid evaluation.
Use of the Accepted Evaluation Status
ICE uses the evaluation status 'Accepted' to indicate recognition of a shot that is not evaluated for validity in the same way the 'Valid' and 'Invalid' evaluation status codes are used. For example:
- A shot administered after completion (Accepted / EXTRA_DOSE)
- A shot administered above a recommended age (Accepted / ABOVE_REC_AGE_SERIES)
- A shot that may not count towards series completion based on other doses on record (Accepted / VACCINE_NOT_COUNTED_BASED_ON_MOST_RECENT_VACCINE_GIVEN)
The Accepted evaluation status indicates that ICE is acknowledging the shot, but is not labeling it with a 'Valid' or 'Invalid' evaluation status.
Relationship to Dose Validity Value
In addition to returning the evaluation status code, ICE also returns a dose validity value for each dose evaluated. This 'isValid' value in the output is 'true' or 'false.' It is important to note, by default, shots evaluated with the status code 'Accepted' have an isValid value of 'false.' Only the 'Valid' evaluation status maps to an 'isValid' value of 'true', as indicated below:
IsValid | Evaluation Status Codes |
---|---|
true |

false |

Local Configuration
ICE users are encouraged to review the ICE Default Immunization Schedule for instances of where an Accepted evaluation status is returned and determine if local configurations are desired to alter the evaluation status and/or isValid value in display and/or storage of this information. For example:
- According to the Meningococcal ACWY Vaccine Group, ICE will evaluate a meningococcal vaccine given before the ICE series absolute minimum age as Accepted / BELOW_REC_AGE_SERIES. A local determination may be made to display and/or store these shots as Valid (evaluation status: Valid and/or isValid value: true) instead of Accepted (evaluation status: Accepted and isValid value: false). This determination may be made given the indication that meningococcal ACWY vaccination is indicated for certain special situations before the routine vaccination age.
- According to the Hepatitis B Vaccine Group, a patient with two doses of HEPLISAV-B (CVX 189) administered at an appropriate interval is considered complete. If there are other non-HEPLISAV-B shots administered, ICE will evaluate as Accepted / VACCINE_NOT_COUNTED_BASED_ON_MOST_RECENT_VACCINE_GIVEN. A local determination may be made to display and/or store these shots as Valid (evaluation status: Valid and/or isValid value: true) instead of Accepted (evaluation status: Accepted and isValid value: false). This determination may be made based on a preference to display the non-HEPLISAV-B shots as Valid even though these shots are ultimately not contributing to series completion in the scenario where two doses of HEPLISAV-B are on record.
Review each vaccine group to identify when an 'Accepted' evaluation status is returned and determine if an alternate evaluation status and/or 'isValid' value is preferred.
Mapping to HL7
Use of a binary Valid/Invalid evaluation is required in messaging immunization evaluation in HL7 v2.5.1. ICE users are encouraged to review the ICE evaluation status and the ICE isValid value in mapping this information for HL7 messaging.
