Yellow Fever Vaccine Group Evaluation and Forecasting Rules

Clinical Guidelines

These rules align with guidance issued by ACIP/CDC.

See ICE Default Immunization Schedule: Clinical Guidelines for more information.

General Rules for Yellow Fever

General rules are not series-specific; general rules apply to the entire vaccine group.

General Evaluation and Recommendation Rules

Yellow Fever Recommendation Rule

  • When recommending in the yellow fever vaccine group, always return reason code SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT with descriptive text, "Yellow fever vaccination is not routinely recommended in the U.S. and is only indicated for select patients at increased risk. Yellow fever is a live vaccine. An absolute minimum interval of 24 days is required between yellow fever vaccines. An absolute minimum interval of 28 days is required between a yellow fever vaccine and a live vaccine from another vaccine group. The minimum and recommended interval between yellow fever and another live vaccine is 30 days. Refer to ACIP and the CDC Yellow Book: Health Information for International Travel for additional information."

Recommendation Rules Based on Series Completion and Patient Age

  • If the patient is not complete for yellow fever, and

    • the patient is < the absolute minimum age for the Yellow Fever Risk Series, (i.e., < 6 months), then the recommendation is Not Recommended with reason code SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Yellow Fever Recommendation Rule).

    • the patient is >= the absolute minimum age and < routine age for the Yellow Fever Risk Series (i.e., >= 6 months and < 9 months), then the recommendation is Conditional with reason codes BELOW_REC_AGE_SERIES (new forecasting reason code), HIGH_RISK and SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Yellow Fever Recommendation Rule).

    • the patient is >= the routine age for the Yellow Fever Risk Series (i.e., >= 9 months), then the recommendation is Conditional with reason codes HIGH_RISK and SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Yellow Fever Recommendation Rule).

  • If the patient is complete for yellow fever, then the recommendation is Conditional with reason codes COMPLETE_HIGH_RISK and SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Yellow Fever Recommendation Rule).

  • There are no special rules that apply to this series.

Notes

  • 1 Since the Live Vaccine Interval Rule applies to yellow fever vaccines, an absolute minimum interval of 24 days is required from an invalid yellow fever to fulfill target dose 1.

  • 2 ICE will not return forecast dates for yellow fever. See Recommendation Rules Based on Series Completion and Patient Age above.
