Typhoid Vaccine Group Evaluation and Forecasting Rules

Clinical Guidelines

These rules align with guidance issued by ACIP/CDC.

See ICE Default Immunization Schedule: Clinical Guidelines for more information.

General Rules for Typhoid

General rules are not series-specific; general rules apply to the entire vaccine group.

General Evaluation and Recommendation Rules

Typhoid Recommendation Rule

  • When recommending in the typhoid vaccine group, always return reason code SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT with descriptive text, "Typhoid vaccination is not routinely recommended in the U.S. and is only indicated for select patients at increased risk. Refer to ACIP and the CDC Yellow Book: Health Information for International Travel for additional information."

Recommendation Rules Based on Series Completion and Patient Age

  • If the patient is not complete for typhoid and

    • the patient is < the routine age for the Typhoid Risk Series (i.e., < 2 years), then the recommendation is Not Recommended with reason code SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Typhoid Recommendation Rule).

    • the patient is >= the routine age for the Typhoid Risk Series (i.e., >= 2 years), then the recommendation is Conditional with reason codes HIGH_RISK and SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Typhoid Recommendation Rule).

  • If the patient is complete for typhoid, then the recommendation is Conditional with reason codes COMPLETE_HIGH_RISK and SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Typhoid Recommendation Rule).

CVX Code Specific Rules

  • There are no CVX-code specific rules beyond what is noted in the Vaccines table.

Notes

  • 1 Although CVX 25 is a live attenuated vaccine, the ICE General Rule "Live Vaccine Interval" does not apply. CVX 25 is an oral vaccine, and, according to the ACIP “General Best Practice Guidelines for Immunization”, concerns about spacing between doses of live vaccines not given at the same visit only applies to live injectable or intranasal vaccines.

  • 2 ACIP recommends administration of CVX 25 at least 8 hours after administration of CVX 174 (oral cholera).

  • If one of the CVX codes in the table above is administered below the absolute minimum age for that CVX code, then the Evaluation is Invalid and the reason code is BELOW_MINIMUM_AGE_VACCINE, per the ICE General Rule "Evaluation of Shots Below the Vaccine Code Absolute Minimum Age."

Immunization Series and Selection Rules

Series Name

  • There is one series for this vaccine group, the Typhoid Risk Series.3

Notes

  • 3 CVX 25 is recommended as part of a 4-dose series of capsules which are self-administered over a 1-week period. It is assumed that one administration of CVX 25 is indicative of a patient completing the self-administered 4-dose series.
