Clinical Guidelines

These rules align with guidance issued by ACIP/CDC.

See ICE Default Immunization Schedule: Clinical Guidelines for more information.

General Rules for Japanese Encephalitis

General rules are not series-specific; general rules apply to the entire vaccine group.

Japanese Encephalitis Recommendation Rule

  • When recommending in the Japanese Encephalitis vaccine group, always return reason code SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT with descriptive text, "Japanese Encephalitis vaccination is not routinely recommended in the U.S. and only indicated for select patients at increased risk. The only age group for which an accelerated schedule is approved is 18-65 years old. Refer to ACIP and the CDC Yellow Book: Health Information for International Travel for additional information."

Rules Based on Patient's Age

  • If no doses are on record and:

    • the patient is < 2 months old, then the Recommendation is Not Recommended and the reason code is SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Japanese Encephalitis Recommendation Rule).

    • the patient is >= 2 months old, then the Recommendation is Conditional and the reason code is HIGH_RISK and SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Japanese Encephalitis Recommendation Rule).

Series Completion Special Rule

  • If a patient has completed the series:

    • the recommendation is Conditional, with recommendation reasons COMPLETE_HIGH_RISK and SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Japanese Encephalitis Recommendation Rule).

    • and is administered shot(s) after series completion, evaluate all additional shots afterwards as Accepted / EXTRA_DOSE according to the ICE General Rule: Shots Administered After Series is Complete.

  • 1According to the ICE General Rule: Evaluation of Shots Below the Vaccine Code Absolute Minimum Age, if the CVX code in the table above is administered below the absolute minimum age, then the Evaluation is Invalid and the reason code is BELOW_MINIMUM_AGE_VACCINE.

Immunization Series and Selection Rules

Series Name

  • JE-VC Risk 2-dose Series

  • JE-VC Risk 2-dose Accelerated Series (18-65 years)

Series Selection Rules

There are two series for this vaccine group: JE-VC Risk 2-dose Series and JE-VC Risk 2-dose Accelerated Series (18-65 years). The rules for determining which series applies are:

The JE-VC Risk 2-dose Series applies if any one of the following is true:

  • first shot of JE is administered when the patient is < absolute minimum age for dose 1 (i.e., 18 years - 4 days old) of the "JE-VC Risk 2-dose Accelerated Series (18-65 years)".

  • first shot of JE is administered when the patient is >= 66 years old.

The JE-VC Risk 2-dose Accelerated Series (18-65 years) applies if:

  • first shot is administered when the patient is >= absolute minimum age for dose 1 (i.e., 18 years - 4 days old) of the "JE-VC Risk 2-dose Accelerated Series (18-65 years)" and < 66 years old.

Immunization Series: JE-VC Risk 2-dose Series

The JE-VC Risk 2-dose Series is complete after 2 doses.
