Cholera Vaccine Group (Travel/Non-Routine)
Cholera Vaccine Group Evaluation and Forecasting Rules
Clinical Guidelines
These rules align with guidance issued by ACIP/CDC.
See ICE Default Immunization Schedule: Clinical Guidelines for more information.
General Rules for Cholera
General rules are not series-specific; general rules apply to the entire vaccine group.
Cholera Recommendation Rule
When recommending in the Cholera vaccine group:
always return reason code SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT with descriptive text, "Cholera vaccination is not routinely recommended in the U.S. and only indicated for select patients at increased risk. Refer to ACIP and the CDC Yellow Book: Health Information for International Travel for additional information.", except when the Recommendation is Not Recommended and the reason code is COMPLETE.
Rules Based on Patient's Age
If no doses are on record and:
the patient is < the routine age (i.e., 2 years old) for the Cholera Risk 1-dose Series, then the Recommendation is Not Recommended and the reason code is SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Cholera Recommendation Rule).
the patient is >= the routine age (i.e., 2 years old) for the Cholera Risk 1-dose Series and < 65 years old, then the Recommendation is Conditional and the reason code is HIGH_RISK and SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Cholera Recommendation Rule).
the patient is >= 65 years old, then the Recommendation is Not Recommended and the reason code is TOO_OLD and SUPPLEMENTAL_TEXT (see Cholera Recommendation Rule).
Cholera Vaccines
CVX Code | Name | Live Vaccine Interval Rule Applies | Absolute Minimum Age |
|---|---|---|---|
1741,2 | cholera, live attenuated (Vaxchora)3 | No | 2 years - 4 days |
CVX Code Specific Rules
There are no CVX-code specific rules beyond what is noted in the Vaccines table.
Notes
1Although CVX 174 is a live attenuated vaccine, the ICE General Rule "Live Vaccine Interval" does not apply since this is an oral vaccine. According to the ACIP “General Best Practice Guidelines for Immunization”, concerns about spacing between doses of live vaccines not given at the same visit applies only to live injectable or intranasal vaccines.
2According to the ICE General Rule: Evaluation of Shots Below the Vaccine Code Absolute Minimum Age, if the CVX code in the table above is administered below the absolute minimum age, then the Evaluation is Invalid and the reason code is BELOW_MINIMUM_AGE_VACCINE.
3ACIP recommends that live oral cholera vaccine should be administered at least 8 hours before ingesting the first dose of Ty21a oral typhoid vaccine (CVX 25).
Immunization Series and Selection Rules
Series Name
Cholera Risk 1-dose Series
Series Selection Rules
There is only one series for this vaccine group.
Immunization Series: Cholera Risk 1-dose Series
The Cholera Risk 1-dose series is complete after 1 dose.
Vaccine Dose Parameters - Minimum and Routine Ages
Dose | Series Name | Absolute Minimum Age | Minimum Age | Routine Age | Latest Recommended Age (less than) | Valid CVX Code(s) per Dose for this Series |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Cholera Risk 1-dose Series | 2 years - 4 days4 | N/A | 2 years | N/A | 174 |
Notes
4The ICE General Rule: Shots Administered Below Series Absolute Minimum Age for Dose 1 still applies (i.e., For inactivated vaccines, no absolute minimum or recommended interval applies from an invalid shot (attempted dose 1 given below the absolute minimum age for dose 1) to target dose 1.). For evaluation and recommendation purposes, CVX 174 will be treated like an inactivated vaccine because although it is a live attenuated vaccine, it is an oral vaccine, and according to CDC’s “General Best Practice Guidelines for Immunization”, concerns about spacing between doses of live vaccines not given at the same visit applies only to live injectable or intranasal vaccines. If a shot is given before the absolute minimum age for dose 1, ICE will continue to not recommend Cholera according to the above Rules Based on Patient's Age for Cholera.
